You want your save-the-date to look unique, personalized and funky; so that it can attract your guests’ attention and make them want to attend your wedding. Save-the-date cards for weddings should ideally reflect the couple’s personality, and the wedding tone.
Save the date cards are miniature announcements that precede actual invitations, and their main use pertains to weddings. They’re informal, concise, and pave the way for the actual invitations, much later on. Since weddings are events that require participation and attendance of the extended families on both sides, it can be quite hairy to ensure that they’re all there. In order to allay any potential problems with attendance, save the date cards are sent from 6 to 9 months in advance, but 12 months is appropriate if the wedding coincides with special holidays and/or it’s a destination wedding.
You should send save-the-date cards to all of your intended guests when either of these circumstances fit your situation. Even friends and family members who you already know will attend should be sent a card.
The sole purpose of save-the-date cards is to give the people you intend to invite to your wedding plenty of advance notice. If, for example, you are planning to marry during the holiday season or a holiday weekend, you’ll want your guests to reserve you wedding date on their calendars months in advance. If you will be inviting guest from out of town who will need to fly in for the wedding, they will need time to make the necessary travel arrangements.
The wording of save the date cards never strays far from a central outline. The names of the couple, date, city, and addendum, ’invitation to follow’ or ’formal invitation to follow’ are the only required elements. The save the date card looks like a succinct verse on a small minimalist-style card.
